Recipe #9 – Spicy beef stir-fry with eggy rice

I’ve been toying with how to open this post, but really one word sufficiently sums it up… magical!

Thus far this recipe is my favourite and just thinking about it makes me salivate, I’m recounting the experience as I type.

I think a large part of its delicious tastes/smells is due to the Chinese five-spice powder, which was a revelation to me.

Used in many Chinese dishes it traditionally contains Szechuan peppercorns, cloves, cinnamon, fennel seeds and anise.

I struggled trying to track it down and eventually found a local company making it, The Cape Herb & Spice Company and after a few false starts I located a bottle of it at Spar on Rosmead Ave.

The recipe itself is a true 20 minute meal, requiring you to prepare all your ingredients ahead of time, then throwing them together is a few minutes.

The eggy rice is simple to make consisting of rice, an egg, soy sauce and spring onions, waiting for the rice to cook is probably the longest part of the meals preparation.

All in all a wonderfully easy meal to prepare, that tastes absolutely amazing.

I’m surprised you can’t find five-spice easily in S.A. There
must not be a large Asian influence there like there is here on the west
coast of U.S. I take it you can’t write down the recipe because of copyright laws? Do you also change up the title of the recipe as well?
I got to go get that book!

    Hi Sally,

We have a large Cape Malay population here, but its roots are in Malay and Indonesian food, curries, masalas
etc more than Asian per say.

RE the recipes, yip, can’t share them because of copyright reasons, though the titles remain, as do the categories as they are so anyone with app can follow along if they want, I just can’t share specifics.

    Cheers

    Matt

nom, I think you just influenced my lunch :)

Any chinesy stuff you need you can get at the N1 value centre, there is a chinese supermarket there. They have everything although you may need to ask for them to find it unless you can read the labels.

Next time you make the eggy rice, add a bit of sesame oil to the egg.

Chinese supermarket, yum yum… one of the things I’m enjoying most about this project is discovering all these great spots for ingredients in Cape Town.

I still need to visit Atlas Trading though I got a few spices the other day from the Curry Pot in Claremont, which was an overwhelming sensual experience.

Thanks for the tip on the vegetable oil.

    Hi Matt
no one has copyright over ingredients so you can rewrite exactly. There is copyright on the actual copy.
having said that jamie does have a lot of power and a strong legal team :-)

Hey Elise, I know! Remember I hit a couple Teriyaki places in Seattle with with you and Rob, not to mention a couple other places along the West Coast. I still remember that amazing Japanese barbecue we had in San Gabriel in Cali, yum yum!
