Recipe #10 – Garlic prawns & veg on herby lentils with flour-less chocolate cake with cream and cape gooseberries
Tonight was special, very special.
It was the first night I’ve inflicted my cooking challenge on friends and were joined by Carl Wegelin and Becky Irene Kenneth-Watts (who has the longest name ever!).
Carl is the guitarist for Cape Town based band Plush and a long standing friend, Becky is a groupie, ah, I mean, his girlfriend, and is one heck of a baker (more on that later!).
So this was not a 20 minute meal, for no other reason than all our idle chit-chat caused it to be more like a 40 minute one, but it was great to catch up, having been somewhat housebound with our little man.
We enjoyed a lovely Graham Beck Brut while waiting for the meal to make it’s appearance (a regular occurrence with Carl and I), and I’m happy to say it was a success (well they said so, hopefully out of gratitude and not pity).
After a couple false starts we managed to track down some blanched, deveined and deshelled king prawns at Snoekies, imported from India, turns out the prawn trade in Cape Town isn’t all that big… stupid Atlantic Ocean!
These herby lentils contained a different selection of herbs from the previous ones cooked up in the lamb and herby lentils meal, and I used baby spinach instead of swiss chard to mix it up. I think the lamb ones were better, but these were great none-the-less.
Now back to Becky, she decided to spoil us with a homemade desert, a flour-less chocolate cake, served with whipped cream and cape gooseberries and it was fan flipping tastic!
The picture seriously doesn’t do it justice and I think we all died a little chocolaty death.
So left with the aftermath of cooking these delightful meals we sent them on their merry way. No sooner were they out the door we were in bed, snuggled up with our sleeping monster, the joys of parenthood.
Yummy….I will have to try the prawns and lentils. Sounds wonderful. And nothing beats a flourless chocolatey death cake experience hehe.
Yip, that chocolatey death cake experience was quite something, the gooseberries were a great pairing, it kind of made me feel less guilty about all the chocolate!
I love both courses!!! Garlicy prawns sound good even at 5 in the morning!!
What a night! The herby lentils were one of the tastiest lentil dishes I’ve ever tasted – could eat them on their own! The prawns hit the spot though. Nathan was not entirely impressed that the cake took so much longer to bake than anticipated, but I think he forgave us after we stuffed his parents full of chocolate :)
Yes I do have the longest name ever!! It’s actually Ann Irene Kenneth-Watts, but I thought that would confuse people :-)
The garlic prawns and herby lentils have been put on my eat-more-and-reccoment-to-ppl list. Thanks for a wonderful night of food, friends and the cutest little bear in the world! That Graham Beck Brut is my happy place…
