Recipe #18 – Sausages with homemade baked beans

Sausages with homemade baked beans

Ah, pub food, hearty, somewhat healthy, but all good.

I’d NEVER thought about making my own baked beans before, like most South African’s mine usually come in a can, generally KOO ones in this household, occasionally I’ll break out of convention and add one of their flavoured ones… not today, today I get to make my own.

Essentially they are white cannellini beans infused with the flavours of bacon, fresh thyme, garlic, tomatoes and smoked paprika (a real winner!).

A very quick meal to prepare and 20 minute worthy. Outside of the beans and sausages the meal is served up with a very fresh, tasty gem lettuce salad with a creamy lemon dressing.

I was finally able to commission my new Le Creuset 26cm Square Skillet Grill from Yuppiechef. What a joy!

Evenly cooked sausages with that distinct grill pattern I’ve come to love, turned of course with my matching 24cm Cuisipro Silicone Tongs.

The only blatant ‘oops!’ I made was forgetting that while the grill has a handle, it is also cast iron and part of the pan… basic science should have prevailed, sadly it didn’t and trying to pick it up bare handed was not exactly the best idea I could have had… nothing some cold water couldn’t fix, crisis averted.

Aaah I have many fond memories of Koo baked beans! Eaten out of the tin as student, yup good times.

Homemade baked beans- wow! I just found smoked paprika (the Spanish variety) at Woolworths, and was about to ask a colleague in Budapest to send some.
Congrats on the Le Crueset. It will serve you well. I have been building a collection, very slowly (and not as steadily as I would like), over the last few years. Have you seen the metallic series?
Nice to see Yuppie Chef stock them too.
Well done on your cooking challenge so far. Enjoying your inspiring blog!

Indeed! That is where I sourced my paprika as well, really fantastic stuff!

Thanks for the kudos on the Le Crueset, first, in what I hope will be a growing collection over the years to come. I have indeed seen there stainless steel/metallic range, it is that range whose wok I’m interested in.

    Cheers

    Matt
