Recipe #21 – Parmesan crusted plaice & salad
Tonight was a little out the box for me and chosen on a bit of whim really. As some of you may know I have several fish dishes that I need to tackle in this challenge and I’ve been stumped about where to get good, clean, fresh fish.
I know, this is Cape Town, I could hit Hout Bay or Kalk Bay and buy it straight off the boat, problem is some of them are quite specialized and I need to find local, sustainable equivalents… enter Fish4Africa!
I first heard about them through my local sushi house after inquiring where they bought their fish they mentioned Fish4Africa. I kind of had it on my mind to look them up but as luck would have it I happened to pass their shop in Woodstock and went in for an impulse buy.
Let me say that it was an education, the staff were super friendly and really helpful.
I went for the safe bet and asked for tuna only to be informed it was out of season, so I added my name to their ‘Tuna Lover’s’ list (I’m not kidding, it is a real list!), apparently they will be in season next month, so the grilled tuna will have to wait a little longer.
Right, so next up plaice… I know enough to know that plaice is a flatfish, and it isn’t native, so I needed something to replace it, west coast sole should do the trick.
The ladies made short work of preparing the fish for me and before I knew it I was walking toward the till to pay for my ‘catch of the day’.
Again I highly recommend them and will certainly be back soon and as their motto states, ‘Anything fresher is still swimming!’.
Onto the meal itself, it is pretty simple actually, battered fish with a hint of chilli served with watercress/avo salad, certainly 20 minute worthy.
The only hassle I had was keeping the lovely batter ON the fish, the pics in the app show this beautifully grilled plaice and my sole didn’t want to keep it together.
What I lack in presentation I’m told I made up for in taste, my wife loved it, and even though the house smelt like battered fish for a day, it was well worth it.
